General Data Protection Regulation

On December 17, 2015, the European Parliament and Council of the European Union reached an informal agreement on the final draft of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”).

The GDPR has finally been adopted on April 14, 2016, after four years of drafting and negotiations. The GDPR is now officially EU law and will directly apply in all EU countries, replacing EU and national data protection legislation.

Once officially adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, the GDPR will apply in EU Member States after a period of two years.

Last 2nd February 2016, the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party adopted the Work Programme 2016 (417/16/EN, WP235)

It is worth noting this time that the General Data Protection Regulation and the Directive on Police and Justice will change the structure and the way WP29 works today. We are very pleased to announce the formation of a new collaborative working group called Constitution Lab. The Constitution Lab is an open, online working group for the research, understanding, and innovation of citizen participation in constitution building. The Lab brings together expertise from academia, civil society and technology to gather knowledge necessary to produce meaningful improvements to the process of constitution building. We are working at the intersection of law, international development, political science, and technology, but welcome perspectives from other areas, such as sociology, anthropology, media and communication.
